Although acne on the buttocks is less embarrassing compared to full blown acne on your face, it can be a problem especially when it becomes a source of discomfort when you are sitting down. Usually mild in appearance, it can become quite severe if left untreated.
Acne on the buttocks is a result of essentially the same factors that cause acne on other parts of the body.
Clogged pores are the usual cause of acne on your bottom. Since our buttocks are not exposed to sun and air, they are often damp and sweaty especially in people who live in warm and humid climates. Sweat and dirt can get trapped in the pores and without aeration the pores get irritated, inflamed and subsequently develop into pimples.
Like the acne that occurs on other parts of the body, genetics may also have something to do with the development of this type of acne. Some people are more prone to producing excess amounts of oil through their oil glands, the glands that lubricate the skin and help keep it smooth and supple. When the glands produce too much oil, excess oil can dry up and clog the pores, making them more susceptible to inflammation.
As your first option, there are a number of OTC creams and ointments that are designed to help treat the condition. Well known brands like Proactiv, Neutrogena & Clearasil etc all have products that can do the job. You can also consult a dermatologist who specializes in this type of acne who can recommend specific treatments.
If the problem is severe, your doctor may recommend oral antibiotics to kill the bacteria. There are also topical antibiotics that do the same job. In most people, this solves the problem, but maintenance is also important to ensure that the problem does not flare up again.
In order to prevent acne from flaring up again, you can start by wearing breathable clothes, especially if you are prone to sweating or if you live in hot and humid climates where you tend to sweat a lot.
Never wear satin or polyester underwear. These fabrics do nothing to wick your sweat away from your body. Cotton underwear is your best bet if you want underwear that allows your skin to breathe. It is also important not to let dried sweat remain on your body for long periods. After exercise, take a shower, or dry your skin and change into clean clothes.
You can also use hypo allergic powder on your buttocks after you shower since powder easily absorbs sweat. If your rear end is prone to rashes, you can try using baby powders specially formulated to prevent diaper rash in babies.
The anti-inflammatory properties in these powders may be just what you need to prevent irritation. It would also help if you keep your toilet seats clean. Although dirty seats are not a direct cause of acne, you are doing your skin a lot of favors if you only expose it to clean surfaces.
Acne on the buttocks can be an embarrassing condition for both men and women. It can cause self-esteem issues, especially for those who are in intimate relationships. Although the problem is caused in a part of the body that is not always visible to other people, the condition can still bring a lot of discomfort to the person suffering from it.
It is important that you manage the condition by eliminating the environments that can cause it to occur in the first place.
